Many people are dissuaded from retaining a family law attorney because of the cost. A no-frills, amicable divorce can cost several thousand dollars, especially in San Diego. We often get clients who tell us, “Lawyers are so expensive! I’ll just go it alone and see how it goes. If things go badly, I’ll ask for help.”
The problem with this strategy is that once things “go badly,” it can be very difficult to turn things around. Maybe you have to defeat a bad Family Court Services (FCS) recommendation. Perhaps the Court has already made unfavorable orders, or you have signed a stipulation you don’t like, and you want new orders.
These things can be done. We do them all the time. But it is generally not cheap, and the process could have been far more inexpensive had you gone in prepared and represented. We would much rather represent a client from start to finish for $5,000 than $50,000.
At the very least, you should find out what you are turning down before you reject representation. Our consultations are inexpensive ($10 in Hemet and in El Centro if you mention this post) or free (in San Diego), and they are educational and entertaining. At a consult the other day, we were told, “You gave us more information in 20 minutes than our last three attorneys!”
Law is hard: That’s why it takes several years of law school (not to mention the extra years spent on Certifying for the Family Law Specialization exam) just to be allowed to practice it. Don’t go it alone. Let our experts at least get a look at your problem so you know what your options are.
